3 At Oxford and Cambridge universities, the Long Vacation runs for the summer months—roughly July to September, inclusive. The other two vacations, Christmas and Easter, are much shorter— hence the name. Abbott was an undergraduate at Cambridge and then a fellow and later an honorary fellow of St. John’s College, Cambridge. He was also Hulsean lecturer at the university in 1876 and select preacher at Oxford University in 1877. However, the Flatlanders’ Long Vacation starts on their equivalent of December 30. (Abbott does not specify their calendric system beyond allusions to year numbers.) Presumably, Abbott borrowed the phrase without being concerned about precise timing.
